Past President!
The most significant and satisfying thing that one experiences when serving on a P&C, is witnessing the physical and emotional difference that is made to the children’s school environment. This is a result of the efforts of a group of dedicated parents and friends.
Originally P&Cs were generally a group of mothers that ran a tuckshop and conducted fund raising through such things as lamington drives to provide minor funds for school equipment etc. If there were enough volunteers perhaps a school would have fete.
As time passed P&Cs had to “grow up” to face the ever increasing changes and demands of modern day schools to produce higher standards and outcomes for their students. With these challenges came all sorts of compliance and accountability requirements, not only for the teachers and staff, but also in the way in which P&Cs operate.
In “growing up” P&Cs were forced to take a more businesslike approach to their operations. Tuckshops and Uniform shops needed to be financially viable to help contribute to the funds donated to the school. Outside School Hours Care Centres, which were new to P&Cs, were taken on with all the accompanying strict legislative requirements for running a childcare centre.
Legally, commercially and professionally P&Cs have” grown up”.
School budgets have come under such pressure to the extent that a reliance on an annual injection of funds from the P&C is now a norm rather than the exception.
Fortunately over recent years we have seen a range of grant funding from various Government and private organisations that P&Cs are able to access for specific projects. This has taken pressure off the “lamington drive funds” and allowed the P&C to fund projects without relying on an army of volunteers.
During my involvement with the MPSS P&C, I was part of a group that experienced that satisfaction of making a difference to the school environment through the completion of many projects such as:
· Airconditioning of the Library
· Renovation and airconditioning of the Tuckshop
· Shade structures and blanket for the pool
· Shade structures for school
· New covered General Assembly Area
The MPSS fete is now the most popular and financially successful of all fetes in the area.
If you want to make a difference and be part of a team with a common goal and enjoy great times, then join the P&C. You will not be disappointed.
